A talented painter, muralist, stage performer, and mime, Michael Gonzales is best known locally as the original director of the Solstice Parade. Gonzales set its rules - no motorized vehicles, live animals, signs, or logos allowed. Gonzales’ final year directing the parade was 1981, and for the next two years, his artwork would be used as the official posters of the celebration. Gonzales died in 1989 at the age of 38 due to complications from AIDS. A mentorship program for young artists was created in his name. |
