Description |
The home of Gardner Spring Chapin (1833-1895), his wife Lucy Frisbie Chapin (1843-1895) and their daughters Carrie and Katherine. The lot, at the southwest corner of Chapala and Micheltorena streets, was purchased for $5,000 in November 1888 and the home, costing in excess of $10,000, was completed in April, 1889. Mr. Chapin was a highly successful Chicago grocer with even greater success as a distiller and distributor of sour mash. Like many of Santa Barbara's grand Victorians, the former Chapin home eventually became a boarding house and apartments. At one point it was an antique store and in its final days, the "Iopan," a coffee house featuring folk music entertainment. It was demolished and replaced by a gas station around 1965. The Chapin barn still stands at 117 West Micheltorena Street. |
