Description |
The St. Charles Hotel (aka San Carlos Hotel) at 805 State Street just above the northwest corner of State and De la Guerra streets. The two-story adobe was the first constructed in what has become known as the Monterey Colonial style. It was built as a home between 1834 and 1836 by China trader Capt. Alpheus B. Thompson (1797-1869). In 1868, it was converted into a 30-room hotel. Later, the first floor became occupied by various businesses. The presence of the realty firm E. H. Heacock & Son dates the photo between 1888 and 1889. |
