Description |
Mattei met Merle Gossett Wilhoit in 1923. The two married in 1932. He became especially close to his stepson, Douglass. Mattei drew this portrait four years after the couple met. Mattei and Merle became a well-matched couple. They were witty conversationalists together. They had a wide circle of friends included Tubby and Alice Davis, Louis and Alice Walker Soles, Margaret Waterman Canby, Alden Painter, publisher Reginald Fernald, and of course artist like John Gamble and Albert Herter. |
