Description |
Such was the esteem in which Thomas Storke was held in his community, he came to be known as "Mr. Santa Barbara." As the long-time publisher of the Santa Barbara News-Press, Storke plated a prominent role in city and county affairs for decades. His support for the construction of Lake Cachuma and the development of UC Santa Barbara were keys in the success of these projects. At his 1971 memorial, Storke was termed by his friend Earl Warren, then Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, as Santa Barbara's "most powerful citizen of the century. |
