Description |
James W. Burke was one of the early settlers in California not of Spanish or Mexican descent. An Irish merchant, sea captain, and trader who made the run from Peru to California, Burke first arrived in Santa Barbara in 1824 on the Jóven Tartar. Greatly impressed by the region and climate, four years later he turned his back to the sea and settled here permanently. Also known as Don Santiago, Burke, like many other early foreigners, married into a Spanish family and was afforded an elevated level of social prestige and financial stability. His bride was Josefa Boronda, a woman known for her great beauty, whose father, Don Manuel de Boronda, had come from Spain to Mexico and then California in 1769 with the Portola expedition. |
