Description |
In December 1602, Spanish explorer Sebastián Viscaíno, sailing up the present California coast, encountered a sudden tempest. The sailors sought the intercession of St. Barbara, and were delivered from shipwreck on her Feast Day, December 4th. In thanks, they named the Channel in her honor. Today, her name graces our City and the Queen of the Missions, founded in 1786. |
